The marine reserve has an overall surface of 18.98 km2 and includes an integrated reserve around Hormigas Islands, El Bajo, El Mosquito and the small islands of El Hormigón and La Losa. These typical elements of the marine environment are a high biodiversity and ecosystems in good condition, amongst which we can find oceanic fields and rocky coral beds.
The aim of the marine reserve is to provide the protection, regeneration and development of the fishing resources to sustain the fisheries and allow artisan fishermen to survive in their traditional way of life.

The marine reserve also offers the possibility of practising other low-impact activities (diving, environmental training, etc.) which contribute to the economic development of the area.
